Modern drives mostly rely on a USB type C connector but this only describes the shape of the connector and the actual speed can range anywhere up to 20 Gbps.

Why the hell did Apple go to a SSD hardrive 128G or 250G is nothing for a laptop. Having an NVMe SSD won't affect compatibility, durability or anything else. We won't get bogged down in how it works or why it's faster, all you really need to know is that it's fast. You may see portable SSDs described as having NVMe storage, this is currently one of the fastest types of SSD available. The good news is that SSDs up to 1TB in capacity are more affordable than ever before, so if you don't need mountains of storage, SSD is definitely the way to go.
